Poker In Arizona: Don’t Bet On It

Social poker clubs under siege, authorities conduct gangland-style raids.

Authorities from the Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG) went off-the-reservation late last week when they raided five different social poker clubs after a months long investigation where proprietors were under suspicion for the Class 1 misdemeanor crime of illegal gambling.

For-profit poker is completely legal in Arizona, so long as you are playing inside one of the tribal card rooms. Not happy with the games there, poker enthusiasts have taken to playing low-limit tournaments in strip mall card rooms, which are also legit as long as no rake is taken. Despite the low stakes, apparently they were high enough for authorities to crack down hard and confiscate a whopping $5k in cash, sending a stern warning to recreational players in the state that fun will not be tolerated.

The Arizona venues include: Pocket Rockets, Cracked Aces, AZ Poker Supply, Poker Play , Joker Social Club. It should be noted that highest advertised buy-in for the Pocket Rockets card room is a $40 deepstack.
