Costorda Still Leads San Diego Poker Classic at Midpoint
The $600 main event at Jamul Casino Resort had two starting flights left on the schedule.
The San Diego Poker Classic $600 Main Event had reached the halfway point of its scheduled starting flights at Jamul Casino Resort, with Pablo Costorda still leading on 699,000 chips. Day 1a and Day 1b had produced 91 and 105 entries, sending 11 and 13 players on, and two more starting flights were still on the schedule.
According to PokerNews, Costorda’s Day 1b stack remained the biggest in the tournament through two flights. Matthew Gawel finished the second flight with 219,000, and Ricky Barraza bagged 151,000.
Day 1a had been topped by Scott Aulds, who finished with 592,000. Kyler Somer ended that flight with 500,000, and Robert Fortuno advanced with 426,000.
Aulds said during Day 1a that last year he was chasing trophies to prove a point to himself, but this year he was chasing the money. That earlier flight also saw Kyler Somer eliminate Robin Brown on the bubble.
The fifth annual SDPC Main Event carries a $600 buy-in and a $100,000 guaranteed prize pool. Last year’s champion was Sebastian Acevedo, who outlasted 375 entries and earned $33,216 after an ICM chop with James Kozono and David Fernandez Sanchez.
Each starting flight advances the top 12.5% of the field, rounded down. Players start with 30,000 chips, can re-enter unlimited times per flight, and may play all Day 1 flights. Day 2 begins at the lowest blind level used on Day 1, registration closes at the start of Level 9, and the structure calls for 30-minute levels on Day 1 and 40-minute levels on Day 2.
