The WPT Bay 101 Shooting Star Championship began Friday in San Jose, California, bringing the $5,300 Main Tour event back to Bay 101 Casino with its signature bounty format and two opening flights.
Day 1A began at 10 a.m. and was scheduled to play nine one-hour levels, finishing at about 8 p.m. World Poker Tour updates listed Day 1B for Saturday, followed by Day 2 on Sunday, Day 3 on Monday and Day 4 on Tuesday.
Players can enter twice on each Day 1 starting flight, then make one optional entry before Day 2, allowing a maximum of five entries. Registration remains open until the start of Day 2 at 11:15 a.m. Sunday.
Each starting table has at least one Shooting Star bounty player. Eliminating one pays $2,500 and awards the eliminator an autographed T-shirt from that player, while the chip leader from each of the two starting flights receives a $5,000 bonus.
The Day 1A field included defending champion Kharlin Sued, who won the previous season’s tournament for $480,700 after a field of 672 entries. Other listed players included Ryan Riess, Erik Seidel, Jeremy Becker, Brian Yoon, Nicholas Rigby, Shannon Shorr, Adam Hendrix, David “ODB” Baker and Shawn Savage, a Bay 101 Rising Star.
Once the field reaches 36 players, the tournament switches to six-handed play and levels increase to 90 minutes. The final six are set to play a televised WPT final table in Las Vegas, with its date still to be announced.
Bay 101 has hosted 15 WPT Championship events since the tour first visited in 2004, when Phil Gordon won his first WPT title for $360,000.
