Jourdan Baptiste Breaks Out in ESPN’s First 2026 WSOP Main Event Episode
Jamie Gold’s feature-table return gave the broadcast an old-school edge, and Baptiste’s table talk made him the new face to watch.
Jourdan Baptiste became the standout name in ESPN2’s first condensed-for-TV 2026 WSOP Main Event episode. The broadcast leaned hard into table talk, and Baptiste ended up giving viewers a new personality to follow alongside one of poker’s most familiar old-school voices.
According to PokerNews, Baptiste had just one recorded live tournament cash before the ESPN2 appearance, a $1,750 min-cash in a World Series of Poker event this summer. In the first episode, he was seated at the feature table with Jamie Gold, the 2006 Main Event champion who won $12 million and built a reputation for speech play.
Gold, now 56, brought that style back to the screen. With pocket aces, he talked Baptiste out of calling with pocket queens, and Baptiste later talked an opponent into calling off an entire stack with a weaker pair.
Baptiste also built a big Day 1 stack in a way that echoed Gold’s 2006 run. Before the first session ended, he sent Gold packing when pocket aces held up against ace-queen after a queen hit the flop.
The production leaned into the era-crossing feel. Lon McEachern and Norman Chad returned as commentators, Omaha Productions featured Poker Boom names like Daniel Negreanu, Phil Hellmuth, Jennifer Tilly, Chris Moneymaker and Erick Lindgren, and the show also mixed in newer personalities such as Martin Kabrhel and Jimmy D’Ambrosio, with Ali Nejad and Nick Schulman rotating through the booth.
Negreanu called the new episodes “exceptionally good,” and the article said plenty of players on social media liked the nostalgia and the return of table-talk-era energy. ESPN’s June 24 programming plan set edited Main Event episodes for July 21, July 28 and Aug. 10 on ESPN2, with the final table scheduled for Aug. 3-5.
Baptiste’s run ended in the second hour-long episode on Tuesday night, which covered Day 2. He flopped the nut straight against James Burns, Burns flopped a set of kings, and after Burns moved all in, the board paired on the turn to send Baptiste out a couple days short of the money. Episodes 3 and 4 air July 28 on ESPN2 at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. ET.
