Michael Dwyer Leads Day 1a in EPT Barcelona Main Event

The Irish player bagged 363,500 from 635 entries as the prize pool climbed past €3 million.

Michael Dwyer ended Day 1a of the €5,300 EPT Barcelona Main Event with 363,500 chips and the lead at Casino Barcelona. The first starting flight drew 635 entries, and 193 players survived ten one-hour levels to bag for Day 2.

As covered in our Aug. 12 look at the Barcelona festival, the Main Event runs alongside a busy EPT week. PokerNews reported that Dwyer took over the top spot in the final level after rivering two pair to crack Jakob Karlsson’s cowboys and send him out.

Matteo Cecchetti finished second with 345,000, and Mark Teltscher was third with 324,000. The other notable bags included Matthew Frankland and Romain Locquet on 200,500 apiece, Nicholas Seward on 141,000, Arian Kashani on 136,500, Anton Wigg on 131,000, Mihai Niste on 126,500, Barny Boatman on 125,500, Maria Konnikova on 109,000, Nicolas Chouity on 106,500, Tomasz Brzezinski on 105,500, Simon Wiciak on 97,500, Benjamin Spragg on 93,500, and Simon Brandstrom on 60,000. Frankland had also recovered from an early stumble by tripling up before dinner with a rivered flush against Alexander Yen, then later busting Seunghyuk Jung when his queens held. Spragg and Konnikova are PokerStars ambassadors.

The prize pool climbed to €3,079,750 after Day 1a, and it still has room to grow because Day 1b is still to come and late registration remains open until the start of Day 2. Day 1b gets underway at noon local time later today.
