Petrangelo Wins Triton Jeju Finale After $150K Chop With Simao
Simao took the bigger payout after the two longtime online rivals agreed an ICM deal heads-up.
Nick Petrangelo won the $150,000 Triton 10th Anniversary Special in Jeju after striking an ICM deal with Joao Simao, although Simao took the larger payout. Petrangelo collected about $2.21 million and the title, while Simao earned about $2.52 million as runner-up.
The no-limit hold’em event brought the Triton Jeju series to a close. Card Player reported that the 67-entry tournament generated a $10.05 million prize pool, with 11 players paid after registration closed on Sept. 16.
Simao began heads-up play with better than a 3:1 chip lead, but the pair agreed to divide the remaining money by ICM, leaving $80,000 and the trophy to play for. Petrangelo then doubled twice before eliminating Simao.
PokerNews reported that the longtime friends, who had played online against one another since 2008, went all-in blind after making their deal. Petrangelo said the result capped a long Jeju trip with several deep runs: “It was a long trip, had a lot of deep runs, it was nice to finish with a good one.”
Triton treated the unusual conclusion as a shared celebration. The tour said Petrangelo and Simao declared themselves both winners and completed winner interviews and photographs together, even as Petrangelo was formally awarded the title. Simao said the chop made the tournament “so special that we have now two winners.”
The final table included Adrian Mateos, Thomas Boivin, Danny Tang, Dan Dvoress and Seth Davies. Mateos was third for about $1.29 million, Atanasov finished fourth for $990,000, and Boivin took fifth for $783,000. Dvoress, Davies and Tang were eliminated earlier at the final table.
The score took Simao’s Jeju earnings to about $9.87 million, nearly one-third of his listed $30.73 million in career tournament earnings. As we reported earlier this week, the Brazilian’s haul was driven by his record $7.25 million victory in the $200,000 Triton Invitational.
Petrangelo earned 720 Card Player Player of the Year points, moving inside the top 100 of the CoinPoker-presented race. Simao gained 600 points and rose to 48th.
Triton’s next stop is Northern Cyprus, where Triton One runs Nov. 5-15 before the Triton Super High Roller Series Cyprus begins Nov. 15 and continues through Nov. 30.
