Stake Poker Sets $8 August Madness PKO With $80,000 Guarantee

The one-day event is capped at 10,000 players and had more than 500 registrants in the lobby on Aug. 27.

Stake Poker’s August Madness is set for Sunday, Aug. 30 at 17:00 UTC, with an $8 buy-in, an $80,000 guarantee and a 10,000-player cap, SoMuchPoker reported. The event is a one-off Progressive Knockout, so every entrant carries a bounty from the first hand.

By Aug. 27, MyPokerCoaching said the tournament was already listed in the Stake Poker lobby, with more than 500 players registered, 90 minutes of late registration and unlimited re-entry during the registration period. The lobby listing showed the event open for registration, and seats are being handed out on a first-come, first-served basis.

PokerStrategy pointed out that the arithmetic is simple at the headline level but not quite that simple underneath. A full field of 10,000 players at $8 a seat would generate exactly $80,000 in buy-ins before rake and before the bounty split, but that gross number does not by itself determine overlay because rake and the split between the regular prize pool and the bounty pool also matter. Even so, PokerStrategy said a field that lands well below capacity could force Stake to top up the guarantee.

In the PKO format, half of an eliminated player’s bounty is paid immediately and the other half is added to the winner’s own head. That means the longer someone runs, the bigger a target they become, while the regular prize pool still matters alongside the bounty action.

As covered in August, Stake marked its ninth birthday with a $90,000 poker special, and August Madness keeps that low-buy-in, high-guarantee push going.
